Honeywell Focus/Easy ID and Drivers License scanning

Honeywell and Metrologic have teamed to create an interesting new product kit to accomplish that task. The EASY ID kit has the ability to scan the State Drivers License, and pull literally anything you want out of it. EASY ID is the software for making sense of the formatted drivers license and is kitted with Firmware being a part of the FOCUS scanner. This kit or firmware is where the magic is.

Reading and scanning(using imager) the Drivers License 2D bar code has been possible for a while, if the license bar code is not encrypted, but it required a lot of programming updates and support in software to keep up with the ever changing bar code format. Eighteen states actually follow a specification for Drivers License. For those eighteen states, this would not be a big issue, that is unless those states decide to add something or change something. For most of the other 32 states, where the license also includes the PDF417 bar code, there is no specification followed. Honeywell engineers have made the commitment to maintain the changing specification in most of the states. This update done by sending out a file to EASY ID, that through the MS1690 or MK1690 FOCUS Scanner and EASY ID Kit, just have to be uploaded.

Configuring the Focus scanner with EASY ID is a snap. There are actually 2 ways to configure the EASY ID and the FOCUS. A manual is one way to program the unit. This works well, but is typical in that once you set the unit up with scans you must scan it again to change the configuration or to roll it out to other locations. Metroset Software is the preferable mehod. Metroset is a program that allows you to pick and choose your delimiters for the data and fields from the program visually. After selecting what you want, you can then print a configuration bar code that can be scanned at any time to setup or configure the EASY ID/FOCUS kit.

Uses for this product might include New Membership, Convention Access, Hospital Admittance, and Age Verification. By using a camera, a Zebra HC100 wristband printer, and the easy DL kit, and software a hospital admittance program could be crated. Another application could log every entry into an establishment that requires age verification. It could be logged as to pass fail, and check expired license and appropriate age. Oh we did that logging app by the way just to test the unit, and the scanner made it simple.
